National parks where elephants roam free, and how to choose a safari that fits your route.
Udawalawe
The open plains around the reservoir make Udawalawe one of the most reliable places to see wild elephants. Nearby, the Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves.
Yala
Yala is best known for leopards, but elephants are seen here regularly too. It's a great choice if you want variety on a single safari.
Cultural Triangle parks
Near Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, parks such as Minneriya and Kaudulla attract large herds in the dry season. Which park is best depends on the season—we'll advise before your trip.
Watching responsibly
We recommend seeing elephants in their natural habitat and ask guests to keep their distance, stay quiet and never feed the animals.
